Spin & Shape: Kids’ Introduction to Wheel Throwing Camp

Overview: Welcome to Spin & Shape, a thrilling and hands-on art camp designed to introduce children to the art of wheel throwing. This camp is a unique opportunity for young enthusiasts to dive into the world of pottery, learning the basics of shaping clay on a potter’s wheel. Our camp offers a fun, immersive experience that combines creativity, skill-building, and the excitement of transforming clay into beautiful, functional art.

Camp Highlights:

  • Getting to Know the Wheel: Children will start their journey with an introduction to the potter’s wheel, learning about its history and how it works. They will get familiar with the basic setup and safety guidelines.
  • Fundamentals of Wheel Throwing: Our experienced instructors will guide the kids through the fundamental techniques of wheel throwing, including centering clay, opening, and pulling up walls to create basic forms like cylinders and bowls.
  • Shaping and Trimming: As the week progresses, children will learn how to shape their thrown pieces and master the art of trimming to create foot rings and refine their works.
  • Creative Exploration: Each day will bring new challenges and opportunities for creative expression. Kids will experiment with different shapes and sizes, trying their hands at making cups, vases, plates, and more.
  • Decorative Techniques: In addition to forming shapes, children will also explore various decorative techniques such as adding textures, carving, and applying slips for color.
  • Glazing and Finishing: The camp experience will culminate with an introduction to glazing, where kids will learn how to apply glazes to their bisque-fired pieces, preparing them for the final firing.

Camp Environment:

  • The camp is conducted in a safe, encouraging, and fully equipped pottery studio.
  • Emphasis is placed on creativity, experimentation, and enjoying the process of making pottery.
